There are weekends in San Diego when being near the water is nice.
And then there are weekends when the water is the event.
September 18–20, 2026, San Diego Bayfair returns to Mission Bay for another weekend of high-speed powerboat racing, beachside entertainment and one of Southern California’s longest-running celebrations of life on the water.
If you’re already planning a weekend around Bayfair, there’s an obvious way to take the experience one step further:
Make the entire weekend about San Diego’s waterfront.
From watching some of the fastest boats in the country tear across Mission Bay to spending an afternoon aboard a private yacht cruising San Diego Bay, Bayfair weekend is a perfect excuse to experience why San Diego is one of America’s great boating cities.
What Is San Diego Bayfair?
San Diego Bayfair takes place September 18–20, 2026, bringing three days of powerboat racing and entertainment to Mission Bay.
The event has been part of San Diego’s waterfront culture for decades and returns in 2026 for its 62nd year.
The headline attraction is H1 Unlimited hydroplane racing.
These aren’t exactly your average weekend runabouts.
H1 Unlimited hydroplanes are among the fastest racing boats in the world, turning Mission Bay into a massive waterfront racecourse as spectators gather around Fiesta Island, Crown Point and Vacation Isle.
Bayfair also features additional classes of powerboat racing, vendors, entertainment, car shows and activities throughout the weekend.
For anyone who loves boats, engines or simply being outside near the water, it’s one of the most unique weekends of the year in San Diego.
Turn Bayfair Into a San Diego Boating Weekend
Here’s our recommendation:
Don’t make Bayfair the only time you get on the water.
Make it the centerpiece of an entire San Diego waterfront weekend.
Spend part of the weekend taking in the racing and then trade the noise and horsepower of Mission Bay for something completely different — a private yacht charter through San Diego Bay.
It’s the perfect contrast.
Morning: Hydroplanes.
Afternoon: Yacht.
Evening: Sunset over the Pacific.
That’s a pretty difficult San Diego itinerary to beat.
See a Different Side of San Diego From the Water
One of the things we love about yacht charters in San Diego is how quickly the city changes once you leave the dock.
Downtown gets quieter.
The skyline opens up.
Coronado stretches across the horizon.
And suddenly places you’ve driven past hundreds of times look completely different.
Depending on your charter and route, a cruise through San Diego Bay can offer views of some of the city’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks, including:
- Downtown San Diego
- Coronado
- Shelter Island
- Harbor Island
- Point Loma
- The USS Midway
- Naval Air Station North Island
- The Coronado Bridge
- The Pacific Ocean
It’s one of those rare San Diego experiences that’s equally enjoyable for locals and visitors.
If you’re coming into town specifically for Bayfair, it’s also an opportunity to see much more of San Diego’s maritime culture than you’ll experience from the shoreline at Mission Bay.
Bringing Friends? Even Better.
Bayfair weekend is also a great excuse to get a group together.
Instead of meeting at another restaurant or bar after the races, charter a yacht for a few hours.
Bring the crew aboard, put on some music, grab a drink and let San Diego provide the backdrop.
Private yacht charters work especially well for:
Birthday celebrations, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate outings, client entertainment, family gatherings, date nights or simply a group of friends looking for something different to do in San Diego.
And you don’t necessarily need a major occasion.
Sometimes “Bayfair is this weekend” is enough of a reason.
Bayfair by Day. San Diego Bay by Sunset.
If there’s one charter time we’d recommend during a weekend like this, it’s late afternoon.
San Diego’s waterfront takes on an entirely different personality as the sun starts getting lower.
Cruise past the downtown skyline.
Head toward Point Loma.
Watch the sun begin to disappear toward the Pacific.
Then turn around and see downtown San Diego start lighting up behind you.
That’s the San Diego people remember.
It’s also why sunset yacht charters remain one of our favorite ways to introduce people to the city.
Visiting San Diego for Bayfair?
If you’re traveling into San Diego for the event, build a little extra time into the trip.
Bayfair gives you the action.
San Diego gives you everything else.
Spend the morning around Mission Bay, explore the beaches, grab lunch somewhere along the coast and reserve an afternoon or sunset yacht charter.
You can experience two completely different sides of Southern California boating in a single weekend — world-class powerboat racing on Mission Bay and a relaxed private cruise through San Diego Bay.
Not bad for a weekend.
Why San Diego Is a Boating City
Events like Bayfair highlight something locals already know:
San Diego isn’t simply a city next to the ocean.
The water is part of the city’s identity.
We have Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, Point Loma, Coronado and the Pacific Ocean all within an incredibly compact stretch of coastline.
There’s military history, sailing culture, sportfishing, racing, superyachts, waterfront dining and some of the best sunsets on the West Coast.
Bayfair celebrates the fast side of that culture.
We can help you experience the relaxing side.
