San Diego's coastal waters see a real mix of tuna species — yellowfin, bluefin, and albacore — thanks to the convergence of cooler and warmer currents offshore. Peak season generally runs spring through fall, though timing shifts year to year with water temperature.
Our fishing charters run aboard Jesse Girl, a 2005 Carolina Express 28' with twin 260hp Volvo diesel engines, 2024 Raymarine electronics, and a 100-gallon bait tank — built for both inshore and offshore trips. Full-day offshore trips target Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail, and Dorado; half-day and inshore trips focus on Yellowtail, Bonito, Barracuda, Calico Bass, and more.
A few things that help:
- Offshore tuna trips take the full 12 hours to reach and work the best grounds — budget the whole day.
- Conditions can change fast on the water; trust your captain to adjust the route.
- Bring layers — mornings offshore run cooler than the marina.
