San Diego sits directly along the Pacific gray whale migration route, which runs roughly from December through April as whales travel between Alaska and Baja California. Dolphins and sea lions are common sightings on San Diego Bay itself nearly year-round; whales are more of a winter-season, open-water possibility.
What we can promise: a private yacht with a route built around good vantage points, at your own pace, without sharing the deck with a boatload of strangers on a fixed-schedule tour boat.
What we can't promise: a guaranteed whale sighting. Wildlife doesn't work on a schedule, and any charter operator who tells you otherwise is overselling it. What we can say is that winter charters routing toward open water outside the bay give you the best realistic chance.
