Forty years at the same desk deserves more than cake in a conference room. A private yacht charter gives a retirement party its own space, away from the office and out on the water instead.
Why a Charter Works for a Retirement Send-Off
The whole yacht is reserved for your group only. There's no other party sharing the deck, no shared seating, and no reservation to time around a restaurant's schedule.
Guests can bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol, or catering and bar service can be arranged in advance. There's no minimum age for passengers, so family of every age can join coworkers and friends for the celebration. The person who books the charter must be 18 or older.
Choosing the Right Yacht for Your Group
For a smaller gathering of close coworkers or family, the Sea Ray 52 and Sea Ray 56 each hold up to 13 guests, with a flybridge, salon, and foredeck sun space to spread across over a few hours. The Beneteau 50 offers an open cockpit and wet bar for the same group size.
Want to mark the occasion with something that turns heads? The Sunseeker Predator 72 is a 4-hour charter with an aft deck dining area, a good setup for a toast as you cruise past the skyline.
For a retirement party that brings together a whole department or extended family, the Westport 100 is certified for up to 134 passengers, with a main-deck lounge, beverage bar, and panoramic-view salon for a larger group to mingle across multiple spaces. See our Large-Group Charters page for how pricing works at that size, or the capacity guide to help match your headcount to a vessel.
Departing From Mission Bay
If your group is closer to Mission Bay, the McKinna 69 holds up to 13 guests and has a fully enclosed, climate-controlled Skylounge if the evening turns cool. See our Mission Bay Yacht Charters page for details — it's the only yacht in the fleet departing from Mission Bay rather than San Diego Bay.
Toasts, Catering, and a Proper Send-Off
Catering coordination and bar service can both be arranged in advance, useful if you'd rather not manage food and drinks yourself for a larger guest list. Entertainment setup is available too, worth asking about if you're planning speeches, a slideshow of career highlights, or music once the toasts wrap up.
If the celebration is really about the conversation rather than a big event, a shorter cruise works just as well. Our Harbor Cruises format runs 2 to 4 hours past Coronado and the downtown skyline, with San Diego Bay's generally calm, protected water making it a comfortable choice for guests of any age.
Timing the Celebration
An afternoon charter leaves room for a relaxed lunch and conversation on deck. A later charter lets the group watch the sun go down over the water before heading back into the harbor as the downtown lights come on — see our guide to sunset yacht charters for more on planning the timing. Enclosed areas are available on every vessel, so an evening charter doesn't have to end early if the air cools off.
What to Know Before You Book
- Most charters have a 2-hour minimum; the Sunseeker Predator 72 is chartered as a 4-hour trip.
- Full payment secures your date, and cancellations at least 5 days before the reservation are fully refunded.
- If weather turns unsafe for boating, we reschedule to a mutually convenient date rather than sail.
- Non-service pets, smoking, and illegal drugs aren't permitted on board.
- Every charter includes a USCG-licensed captain and crew, and life jackets are provided for every passenger.
- Parking is available in the public lot across the street near the Shelter Island pier.
What It Costs
The Sea Ray 52 starts at $1,900 for the 2-hour minimum, and the Sea Ray 56 starts at $1,980. The Westport 100 is priced by guest-count tier, starting at $1,500 per hour for 25 guests or fewer and scaling up to $2,500 per hour at full 134-guest capacity. See our pricing guide for the full breakdown by vessel, or use the charter price estimator for a quote based on your guest count and date.
